Most home security wins are small, cheap, and take an afternoon: better locks, better lighting, and a few habits. Here’s where to start.

1Locks, Lights, and Entry Points

Add a deadbolt. A handle lock alone is easy to force — pair it with a proper deadbolt.
Reinforce the door frame. A door frame reinforcement kit is inexpensive, needs no tools, and makes kicking in a door far harder.
Check every window lock. Ground-floor windows especially — test that they actually latch.
Add motion-sensor lighting. At entrances and dark corners — cheap, easy to install, and a real deterrent.
Use a light timer when you’re away. Makes an empty home look occupied.

Check before you open the door. A peephole or video doorbell means you never open blind to an unexpected visitor.
Don’t confirm you’re home alone. To unknown callers or visitors at the door — keep it vague.
Keep your name off the mailbox where you can. Small detail, less information for anyone casing the building.
Vary your comings and goings. Predictable routines are easier to plan around than random ones.

Notice what’s moved or missing. Trust that instinct — it’s doing its job.
Be wary of unexplained new objects. A smoke detector you didn’t install, an odd cable — treat anything unexplained with suspicion.
Don’t go in if a door looks forced. Call someone and wait outside instead of checking it out alone.

Agree on a safe room. One room everyone would go to in a break-in — ideally with a lock, a phone, and a way out.
Keep a charged power bank and torch there. So it’s never a scramble in the dark.
Set an outdoor meeting point too. For fire or any reason you need to get everyone out fast.
