Who we are

Everyday Safety Hacks is an independent website run by Richard Clarke, contactable at everydaysafetyhacks@proton.me. For the purposes of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the UK GDPR, Richard Clarke is the data controller for this site.

What information we collect

This site doesn't require an account, a login, or any registration to use. We don't run analytics or tracking scripts, and we don't set any cookies of our own.

The personal data we handle is limited to what you choose to send us:

  • If you email us at everydaysafetyhacks@proton.me, we receive your email address, whatever name you sign with, and the content of your message. We use this only to reply to you.

Our hosting provider (Netlify) keeps standard server access logs (IP address, browser type, page requested, timestamp) for security and reliability, as almost every website host does. We don't access these for marketing or profiling.

Cookies

We don't set any cookies, and the site loads no third-party scripts, fonts or trackers, so no cookie banner is needed. If that ever changes, for example if we add analytics, we'll ask for your consent first where the law requires it and update this policy.

Legal basis for other processing

Where we process your email because you've contacted us, our legal basis is our legitimate interest in responding to messages sent to us. Server logs are kept under our legitimate interest in keeping the site secure and working.

How long we keep information

We keep emails for as long as is reasonably useful to resolve your query or keep a record of correspondence, then delete them. Server logs are rotated automatically by our host after a short period set by the host rather than by us.

Where your information is processed

Email is handled via Proton Mail, based in Switzerland, a country the European Commission recognises as providing an adequate level of data protection. Our web host, Netlify, is a US company and may process basic access information (IP address, timestamp) outside the UK/EU under the safeguards it describes in its own privacy policy.

Your rights

If you're in the EU or UK, data protection law gives you the right to:

  • access the personal data we hold about you
  • ask us to correct it if it's inaccurate
  • ask us to delete it
  • restrict or object to how we use it
  • ask for a copy in a portable format
  • withdraw consent at any time, where we're relying on consent
  • complain to your national data protection authority, for example the AEPD in Spain (aepd.es) or the ICO in the UK (ico.org.uk), if you think we've mishandled your data

To exercise any of these, email everydaysafetyhacks@proton.me.

Children's privacy

Some of our guides are written with teenagers and young adults in mind, but this site doesn't knowingly collect personal data from children and isn't designed to. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we'll delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the site evolves. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
